Commemorating NNHN's One-Year Anniversary

Dear Neighbors,

It’s hard to believe that it was one year ago that everything changed. As COVID-19 hit, Massachusetts--and indeed a large part of the world--shut down. In response, last March four women came together to launch a Facebook group seeking to help our community weather the challenges of the pandemic. One year later, we are commemorating this anniversary of what has been a very painful and difficult time for so many of our neighbors. We also want to honor all of you who have been part of this community: you have displayed concern, generosity and openness about what you need and how you can help others in Newton and beyond. A message from Shalini Tendulkar, founder of Newton Neighbors Helping Neighbors:

Over the past 12 months, 4,500 people have joined our community. You have participated in countless porch drives, delivered thousands of bags of food, raised funds for individuals and families, rallied around our small businesses and supported the work of local organizations and partners. Your generous contributions of time, money and resources have eased the financial, emotional and social-isolation burdens of our neighbors in need. Our work is hardly done, and our mission is as critical as ever as we face the future in a post-pandemic world. To sustain our work and carry us forward, we are happy to announce that we have incorporated as a non-profit organization. We are grateful to Newton Community Pride for their fiscal sponsorship, and to all the amazing organizations in Newton that have built such a thriving culture of community care in our city. We are also excited to join with our partner project, Welcoming Newton, under our new organizational umbrella, Newton Neighbors. If you would like to sign up for Welcoming Newton emails - a monthly update on what's happening in Newton aimed at newcomers and those who still feel new - please sign up here. We invite you to join us over the next seven days as we honor the ways our community has come together over the past year and preview what lies ahead. Each day this week, we will be posting on:

We hope you will join us on this journey as we move into the next phase of Newton Neighbors 2021! And, as always, thank you for all you do. Stay safe.
