Dear Neighbors,

It is hard to believe we are already into August, and September is just a few short weeks away. We remain in awe of your continued support of neighbors in myriad ways these past few weeks. Whether you are delivering groceries, purchasing thread or baby bands, donating diapers or wipes, dropping off high chairs, or remaining active and engaged in our online community by offering advice, support and encouragement, we are so grateful. In the spirit of offering continued support we are reaching out to update you on our plan to provide cloth masks for children in Newton and surrounding communities who may not be able to access masks themselves.

A small but mighty team of dedicated sewers - Pat Slate, Pam Weissman, and Saebom SooHoo - and a generous team of neighbors ironing and cutting fabric - Alissa Daniels, Karina Ku, Leah Kolidas and Darina and Sandra Skvarkova - are hard at work making masks. And a huge and special thank you to Shirley Chan for coordinating all these efforts! Take a look at their progress.

Support our efforts in two ways:

  1. Join our team of volunteer sewers. We will give you pre-cut masks, all you have to do is sew the masks on your sewing machine.

  2. Donate baby bands: To help us reach our goal, and accommodate the mask pattern we have chosen we need additional baby bands for ear loops and thread. Please click on this link for more information about purchasing and donating baby bands to this cause.

Finally, want to be more actively involved with NNHN? As we look ahead to the fall, we are hoping to grow our NNHN coordinator team. We are looking for people who are interested in getting more actively involved in the group and helping coordinate or lead various activities. Some examples of things we would like support on are below - this is not an exhaustive list though, so if you have other ways you want to be involved please let us know!

  • Coordinating ongoing projects such as food delivery

  • Researching local services and resources that may be helpful to neighbors who need support

  • Organizing donation drives

  • Writing newsletters

  • Developing a website

  • Tracking data for monitoring and evaluation

  • Developing relationships with realtors and leasing offices to help reach those who are new to Newton (in partnership with Welcoming Newton)

The time commitment will vary depending on what you are involved in, so if you are interested at all please reach out and we can talk in more detail. If you are interested, please email NewtonNeighborsHelping@gmail.com with a couple sentences about yourself and what you are interested in, and we will set up a time to talk.

Gratefully,

Newton Neighbors Helping Neighbors
